The iconic 1-ton Truck from Kia
The Kia Bongo, introduced in 1980, has been a reliable and versatile vehicle in
South Korea and worldwide. Known for its role as a cabover pickup truck and van,
the Bongo has served various purposes, from commercial use to family transport.
First Generation 1980~1994
The Bongo began as a simple 2.2-liter diesel truck. A redesign in 1981 gave it square
headlights, and a petrol engine option was added in 1985. In 1987, the "Power Bongo"
debuted with a 2.4-liter diesel engine. By 1994, the Bongo was updated as the Bongo
J2 with a more powerful 2.7-liter engine
Second Generation 1990~1997
The second generation featured the "Wide Bongo," a rebadged Mazda Bongo Brawny.
A passenger van version, the Besta, also became popular, especially in Brazil. The Bongo
was facelifted in 1994 with a more refined design and upgraded engine.
Third Generation 1997~2004
Launched in 1997, the third generation introduced the "Bongo Frontier" with a more modern
design and a 3.0-liter engine. A four-wheel-drive model was added in 1999, and by 2003, the
truck version was discontinued.
Fourth Generation 2005~Present
The 2005 Bongo III featured updated engines to meet stricter emissions standards, including
a common rail diesel option. A 2.5-liter turbocharged engine version, the K2500, was
introduced 2014, along with a facelift that improved efficiency.
